Thanksgiving in Marseille

By cheri - Posted on 10 November 2009

Thanksgiving is definitely not the same celebrated alone, it being a day to be with the equally enthusiatic...and/or the equally hunger.  There are a couple of options this year to find some turkey around Turkey-day.  On the day itself if you plan to celebrate at home, make sure you order your turkey at least 2-3 weeks ahead of time at your local boucherie (butchers) or possibly charcuterie (deli/meat shop). The earlier in ordering your turkey, the better since it is not a common request and can be quite expensive. Plan on paying around 100 euros for a 6 or 7 kilo bird and make sure you clairify it is to be completely prepared for the oven (i.e. no feathers, feet or head). Read more for list...

Assembling of the remaining typical Thanksgiving menu can be challenging in the beginning, but after awhile you'll discover alternatives that can taste practically the same. Such as the soft brown sugar you need for your baked sweet potatoes can be found in Asian food shops under block palm sugar or reconstituting dried cranberries (which can easily found at any of the large grocery stores) to make cranberry sauce. There are french alternatives to most of your american dishes if you look enough and are ready to make them from scratch.

For others who don't have the time to prepare an elaborate meal or just want the simple pleasure of gathering with the like-minded people to give thanks, there are 3 Thanksgiving celebrations in the city to accomodate your nostalga and stomach. The Mediterranean Anglo American Business Network  and the Marseille Church are hosting at dinner on the 14th at Lycéé Lacordaire and the Organization France-USA is hosting a dinner at the Pointe Rouge Yachting Club on the 26th of November. Democrats Abroad in Marseille is hosting a potluck on the 28th at Bo(a)te in the 1st arron. For more information, visit the links.
